Project Overview

In the Resignation pilot, we filmed using a virtual production setup. I was in charge of one of the most featured scenes, a fictional coffee shop where the four main characters have most of their conversations. The scene is built in Unreal with custom models to match the artistic vision.

Process

After receiving art direction and references from the art director, I began building the coffee shop environment. Besides from creating custom meshes and material, we also scanned some physical props to use in the scene to seamlessly blend the virtual environment with the physical sets on stage. During the rehearsal and lighting setup stage, we worked closely with the director, cinematographer, and light department to create a more realistic and complete result by adjusting virtual lighting and moving virtual assets around. We regularly discussed with the creative team to ensure the coffee shop's visual style met the needs of the pilot episode. We made iterative changes based on feedback to enhance the story's impact. We used advanced techniques like real-time rendering and dynamic lighting to create a flexible filming environment, allowing the director and cinematographer to experiment and capture the perfect shot.

Final Result

With the virtual production technique, acting and filming become more realistic and reduce post-production time. The process combined artistic vision and technical precision. This created a coffee shop environment that served as a backdrop for the characters' interactions and enhanced the storytelling. The final setup allowed for a more efficient shooting schedule, reducing the need for extensive post-production adjustments and letting the team focus more on the creative aspects of the production.
